Your process assignments are designed to help you think through the creative process and experiment with new techniques, processes and more. They count as 10% of your grade and are due at the end of every marking period.
Semester 2, MP3 - Photo challenge
The Assignment:
Choose three challenges from the document linked to below. Follow the instructions, making sure to look up the references and artists they mention (just don’t wing it – do your research!). Plan, sketch, try different things, be creative, take risks, try something that’s out of your comfort zone, shoot multiple photos. Create compositionally strong, finished pieces!
Please note, that there are a few of these challenges that might not work to create a completed, finished, compositionally strong artwork. So, if you get the sense from one of these challenges, don’t choose it or change it so it can create a finished piece.
These pieces can be completed using manipulation in Photoshop or straight photography. However, ALL PIECES/PHOTOGRAPHS should be edited for color and exposure. Use your own photography to manipulate whenever possible.
Develop one finished piece for each challenge you choose. Remember to carefully consider your composition and make sure you are conveying something interesting – why should people care about looking at your photo?
This should be completed on your own time over the next 5 weeks. You are expected to put 1-2 hours of effort a week into this assignment (which means 2-4 hours per challenge). You will turn it into Google Classroom when finished.
Please see below for the list and rubric.
This assignment is due on Thursday, February 22.

Requirements of the technique you choose:
- Be a new technique to you – something you haven’t tried before, or at least put much effort into.
- You must be able to complete it using equipment you or the school has (but think creatively if it’s something we don’t have – you might be able to do it anyway)
- Must be able to be completed on your own time
- Requires experimentation – something that you can try in a variety of ways, and achieve new results based on your experimentation
- You may have to research the technique to figure out how to do it – ask Mrs. Pratt for help if you need it. But you should do all the manipulation or technical setups. No apps or online wizards that do it for you!
- You should plan on creating more than 5 final setups/images – because your early ones might not work out as well as you are figuring out the technique/equipment requirements/etc.
- Must be something that takes time and effort - You should spend at least 5 hours total on this project (an hour a week)
Final expectations
When you are completed with this project, you will be expected to turn in the following (in an album in Google Photos)
- At least 7 photos that show your process – maybe a behind the scenes shot, some examples that didn’t work out so well, etc.
- 5 final, perfect, completed photos that represent the technique/idea you are going for. They should be edit for color and exposure if needed in Photoshop.
- A statement, written as a description of your album explaining your process and what you learned.
When is this project due?
Thursday, December 14. Posted in a Google Photos album, link shared on the Google Classroom Assignment. Post the statement as a comment on your first photo. Please make sure to note what are your process photos and what are your final photos.
