Subject Area Integration Philosophy:
At Kensington Woods we hold a firm belief that by integrating different subject areas, students will develop a deeper understanding of the content, understand how things work in the real world in a more complete way and become more engaged in their classes.
By integrating art into different classes, we provide ways for students to understand and process both contents in new ways. Art is about communicating ideas and provides an excellent way for students to communicate what they’ve learned in more relevant and deeper ways. In integrated art classes, students focus less on artistic technique and more on communicating ideas and the creative process, which helps them develop skills applicable to all disciplines.
Students are expected to try their best and be willing to take risks and try something new. We work hard to create a safe place where all students feel comfortable working, taking risks and sharing their thoughts and artwork.
Integrated Art Curriculum
Art Analysis
Purpose of Art Analysis: To provide students opportunities to connect art and content (concepts and themes) in a real world context. Done through analysis of artworks as well as videos and articles about artists, writers and themes related to the course.
Integrated Art Projects
Purpose of Integrated Art Projects: To provide an opportunity for students to put their content and artistic experiences and ideas in action. Students will make artwork through the creative process, using methods/techniques learned in class as well as their own ideas/experiences/techniques. Students will consider not only the themes and concepts in the content in their work but their conceptual and aesthetic choices to make a holistic work that demonstrates their art and content knowledge and skill. All projects contain big questions/essential questions to link ideas to the real world.
