Social justice poster
In this project, you will combine typography with photography or illustration to create a poster that advocates for a social justice issue of your choice.
Social Justice is the idea that everyone deserves to be and has the right to be treated equally in terms of distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. It relates to equality in treatment relating to race, gender, socio-economic status, sexuality, education, environment and human rights.

Propaganda information
PROPAGANDA – the use of a variety of communication techniques that create an emotional appeal to accept a particular belief or opinion, to adopt a certain behavior or to perform a particular action. (from www.propagandacritic.com)
In class we will review the examples and types of propaganda given below.
In class , your challenge will be to make an argument addressing your response to the question:
Can the use of propaganda be ethical?
I would like you to make a case for propaganda. Can it be used for good, or is it's use only bad? Can it be used ethically? What is your opinion, based in fact and examples?
Your case is expected to include:
The format in which you present your case is your choice but should be professional, clear and easy to understand. You are expected to show examples (see above expectations).
You will present your cases in class on: TBD

- Definition of propaganda
- Explain the purpose of propaganda - this should be connected to your answer to the question, "Can the use of propaganda be ethical?"
- Definitions and examples of at least three propaganda techniques. The examples and techniques you discuss should be examples for your answer to the question, "Can the use of propaganda be ethical?"
- Answer the question - Can propaganda be used ethically? If not, why? If so, how? Include detailed, specific reasons why propaganda can or cannot be used ethically. This should be your opinion, based and justified with fact

Designing the poster
Poster Expectations:
10 Thumbnails: Due TBD
3 Refined and Refined Sketch Reflection: Due TBD
- Address your social justice issue in a respectful, critical, informed and topical way
- Clear message and voice
- Designed in Illustrator
- Incorporates typography purposefully - helps communicate your message (font choice, type layout, size, color, etc.)
- Uses photographs or illustrations of your own (small amounts of outside imagery will be allowed with advance permission - we are not here to plagiarize)
- Image and text work together, not seperate
- Considers background
- Size/shape of your choice (minimum - 12x18in)- should lead to communicating your ideas
- Final mockup of poster design turned in (multiple sheets mounted professionally - we will go over together in class)
