Lansing Art Gallery • 2014 Art Scholarship Alert
Exhibit Dates: April 3 - 25, 2014
Deadline for entry: February 28, 2014
WHAT?
Art Scholarship Alert (ASA) is a juried art competition for grades 9 - 12 from Mid-Michigan communities. This program gives recognition and financial assistance to outstanding art students, encourages artistic growth, and provides an opportunity to participate as an artist in the professional setting of Lansing Art Gallery. An additional Sara Jane Venable (SJV) Scholarship Award of $1000 is given to an outstanding senior who will pursue an art degree upon graduating. The 2014 SJV guidelines and entry forms will be available for download on Lansing Art Gallery's website in January.
HOW?
ASA takes a unique approach to the entry and selection process. Students are required to submit a digital portfolio of original works of art and certify that their artworks are not copied from published photographs, magazine or book illustrations, or other artworks. A jury of art professionals determines which portfolios will be accepted and which will be declined. Acceptance is determined by the excellence and consistency of the art included in the portfolio. Jurors decide which of the accepted portfolios will be chosen for scholarships and art supply awards. In addition, the jurors choose individual pieces from each accepted portfolio to represent the entire portfolio in the exhibition. At least one work from each accepted portfolio is exhibited. One portfolio at each grade level will receive the Portfolio Award. These four selected portfolios will have multiple works displayed. The 2014 ASA guidelines and entry forms will be available for download on LAG's website in January.
WHY?
Young artists learn commitment to a goal and gain self-confidence as they aspire to artistic excellence. Their successes establish them as significant role models for younger students. ASA teaches students in all socioeconomic levels the importance of arts and culture and encourages future support and community involvement.
